PANCA WANDA is another name of Cirebonese Mask Dance.
Panca means Five.
Wanda means Character.
Cirebonese Mask Dance is a local indigenous art form of Cirebon in Java, Indonesia.
It is called mask dance because the dancers wear masks when dancing. Graceful hand, body movements, and musical accompaniment are blended to express characters. Cirebonese Mask Dance have 5 different masks and each mask represent one soul / character. Cirebonese Masks tend to be more expressive rather than beauty, it doesn't have much decoration yet stick to the pure expression of the characters. Each Mask of those 5 characters has a name :
Panji : new born baby character that is pure and innocent.
Samba : kids character that is cheerful and active.
Rumyang : teens character that is mature but also a bit childish sometimes.
Tumenggung : adults character that is wise and totally mature.
Kelana : a representative of bad adults character that is selfish, vicious, and greedy.
Cirebonese Mask Dance is a story of Panji as Hyang Tunggal (God) that split into 4 contradictory characters. Panji is the purest form of character, it is in between all of characters and soul.
Panji is the emptiness and the fullness.
The book PANCA WANDA is an experiment of how a traditional content is combined with a modern design approach in mood, layout, colors, and typeface. The whole design of this book came up with the idea of "expression". Besides its function as an informational book, this book was also designed to give an experience of the Cirebonese Mask Dance expression to the readers by its layout. This book contains an expressive layout of typography (the main element) and photography (supporter element).
