Senios - An Innovative Conept for the Elderly Care

Problem and Solution
Senios is an innovative concept to revolutionise the elderly care system. Especially, in Germany the effects of the demographic change are visible. Over a quarter of the population is over 60 years old. Through this amount of elderly people, many of the foster care homes are overfilled. Furthermore most of the stations in the care institutions are understaffed. That leads to a big problem in the elderly care system, because many of the care assistants do only have time for the most important exercises in their daily care routine.

Senios solves this problem, it is an overarching system, which could be applied in the elderly care and assisted living. The system combines two parts and helps the inhabitants as well as the nurses.

Functions for Inhabitants
The inhabitants wear activity trackers, which collect data like calorie consumption, hydration, sleep function, taken steps and many others. Through these data calls for action like „EAT“, „DRINK“ or „WALK“ can be generated and will be projected at doors. Furthermore, a statistic with the inhabitants of the station shows, which patients took the most steps to motivate the inhabitants.

Through those calls for action and the statistic, the inhabitants will be reminded to act more autonomously and to relieve the overloaded workday of the nurses. Those calls are especially effective for inhabitants suffering from Alzheimer or Dementia.

Via wristband, the inhabitants can also open doors when they come to a specific range, which is important for physically disabled inhabitants. This function can be blocked for example for inhabitants with Alzheimer to avoid, that those people leave a special area. Moreover, the wristband can detect falls and the carriers can press an emergency button to call a nurse.

Functions for Care Assistants
The nurses can obtain the tracked data via an iPad app, which can be shown as well on the computer. This app shows the data for each inhabitant and the care assistants can monitor the weight of an inhabitant, his location, consumed calories etc. Moreover, the nurses wear a special wristband which projects short to-do lists on their forearm for example when they enter a room in the morning.

The wristband will display the preferences and special information about the senior like "dental prothesis supra“ or a preferred radio station to start the day. Besides the wristband can show warnings or alerts, when an inhabitant of a station falls or has pressed the emergency button.

Concept
This is only a concept, which can be probably realised with the technique in five years. Many of the mentioned techniques do already exist in single devices, but by now, there is no device which covers all of those functions.
