In 2014 my friend Monika Kanokova approached me to work on a project. She wanted to become a freelancer and the best way to understand what it mean was to turn to her friends who had already done it. By interviewing 23 talented women, she could extract a lot of information, tips, and ideas about the process of becoming a freelancer.
I was honored to be one of the ladies interviewed. But I was also responsible for the design: cover and inside layout. Buy the book from Amazon here.
Step 1: A Cover
We needed a cover so we could spread the word about the book and get some funding through Kickstarter. We were a team of four girls: Monika, the author; Diana Jean, the editor; Ewelina, the illustrator; and me, the designer.
I made some cover suggestions based on the elements that represented the heart of the book. We decided to go for the typographic version (being a typographer and type designer, this was my favorite anyway!). We conducted polls on Facebook and Kickstarter to get feedback from our users, most of which liked the typographic version as well!

The second round of designs to determine the colors. The pink and turquoise were our colors for the inside, but pink seemed too girly for the outside, since we had interest from a lot of men who wanted to read the book.
Step 2: Inside Layout
The structure of the inside was: articles written my Monika, the narrator, alternating with interviews that she conducted with various freelancing women. Each interview would have a title page featuring a hand-drawn illustration of the woman being interviewed.
It was important to have the inside simple and easy to read, yet structured in some way. I decided to give the narrator her own turquoise color and sans serif typeface. The interviewees would have a pink/salmon color and a serif typeface. This way, it would be easy to browse through the book and know who is talking at any step.
