Silla is a folding stool made during a 2 week project in Antigua, Guatemala called The Antigua Project. Silla which translates to chair in spanish, is comprised of locally sourced cedar, leather, and handmade textile. The woven textile draped over the top of the seat took a total of seven 8 hour days to complete.
I wanted to make a small easily portable piece of furniture that utilized traditional weaving and carving techniques. I chose colors and patterns from existing textiles to create my design, trusting my weaver Dinora, to make decisions about spacing and how to incorporate those elements into a beautiful woven piece. It was truly a collaborative effort.
