Smirk- Independent Dance Publication

Smirk is a non- profit dance organisation and an independent dance publication. Smirk aims to create a
new evolution for dance in South Africa and hopes to be an industry starter for innovative and risk taking independent dance companies. The more independent innovative dance companies that strive for more
than what is expected, the more opportunities for dance and dancers will arise. Smirk is having that can
do attitude and confidence, it is about taking risks and pushing boundaries in what you believe and have
an intense passion for, it is as well knowing that no matter what you can and will succeed. Smirk does
have a bit of a cheek and is a little naughty, but it is a part of its brand personality and it can afford to have
that kind of attitude because it never fails to disappoint. That feeling before you get on stage and knowing
in the back of your head that you are going nail it, but you not going to boast about it, you going to Smirk,
it is the adrenaline rush that comes over you while you performing. When you have just done something
you once never thought was possible. Smirk is rather keeping the people that are currently not pushing the boundaries within dance close, than pushing them away. We want to work with those people and hope to
change the perceptions of those individuals. It is all about compromise, at the end of the day it comes down
to dance, which is the common denominator here. Smirk is what dance needs in order for it to reach its full
potential in SA.
