Graffiti and the Forbidden

This project was done based on the art that comes with urbanization. Among all kinds of art that we can find in an urban environment, I photographed graffiti as it is a strong and contemporary way people use to express themselves.

The aim was to photograph graffiti made in forbidden and sometimes abandoned places within an urban context. To respond to the aim, the photos are contrasting the art with the place, so that we can see fences and wires protecting the places with the graffiti made on the walls.

The inspiration for this project came with photos taken by Martha Cooper (Subway Art, 1984), Norman Behrendt (Burning down the house, 2007-2012), Ozkar Gorgias (Graffiti Writing), Denis Falkeinstein (One night on the run) and Jonas Lara (Nachtaktiv). They give an idea of graffiti as a prohibited art, sometimes showing the artists with their faces covered or even just showing the artwork made in places where they should not have done.

The photos were taken in Newcastle, NSW, Australia.

Hope you all like it.
