The Universe (Dome Projection) - Estrutura do Universo

This projetc was made in patnership with the Planetarium of Porto for it's dome projection. The infografic animation explores the composition of the universe and it's structure, oposing visible matter and dark matter and energy. It's a contrast between what is known and what remains to be explained. At the same time, it tries to bring into perspective the gigantic dimensions of the universe and all it's mysteries.

Este projeto foi realizado em parceria com o Planetário do Porto para ser visualizado na cúpula do mesmo. A animação infográfica ilustra a composição do universo e a sua estrutura, contrapondo a matéria visível com a energia e matéria negra. É um contraste entre o conhecido e o desconhecido, tentando ao mesmo tempo traduzir as dimensões gigantescas do universo e dos seus mistérios ainda por revelar.

The following rig was used to create the distortion for the fulldome projetion. A sphere with a mirror like material, distorts the image that is then reflected by a plane with the same material (small plane at the top). This is the image captured by the camara. A plane with a matte material crops the area of the sphere to be captured.

O seguinte rig foi utilizado para recriar a distorção da projeção fulldome. A esfera recebe um material refletivo, distorcendo a imagem que é então refletida pelo plano com o mesmo material (o plano pequeno no topo). Esta é a imagem que é captada pela camara.Um plano com um material mate aplica um corte à imagem refletida na esfera, definindo a área a ser distorcida.

As a guide during the production process we used a mock upof the planetarium with roughly the same measurements, determining the sweet spot, or the point of the projection with no distortion. This is the white circle at the top of the dome. The cilinder helps visualize how the movements have to occur to stay within that space.

Como orientação durante o processo de produção foi criada uma maquete do planetário com as medidas aproximadas, determinando-se o sweet spot, ou o ponto sem distorção da projeção. Este corresponde ao círculo branco destacado no topo da cúpula. O cilindro ajuda a visualizar a forma como os movimentos se deveriam processar de forma a manter-se nesse espaço.

The projection software Amateras was used during production to test certain moments of the animation, tuning the speed and size of objects to avoid making the audience feel dizzy.

Foram feitos vários ensaios no software de projeção em dome Amateras, de forma a perceber o resultado visual de determinados movimentos, uma vez que velocidades demasiado exageradas poderiam resultar em sentimentos de vertigem no espetador.
