Don Garber, Commissioner,
Major League Soccer kicked off its fifth season last month under the leadership of a new commissioner, Don Garber. Garber, an NFL alum who most recently served as senior vice president/managing director of NFL International, brings experience in events, licensing, sales and marketing, as well as a sense of how to make a sport from one part of the world popular in another. Since his arrival, he has initiated on-field changes to make the MLS game more like the international version, signed marquee players from around the world and introduced a new marketing campaign, "It's Your Game." But his challenges going forward include capitalizing at the grassroots level on the booming numbers of kids who play soccer, building the fan base, raising general awareness of the league, and working with licensees to improve product and increase presence at retail. SGB recently caught up with Garber to discuss his plan of attack for MLS in 2000 and beyond.
