REQUIEM. ILLUSTRATIONS

“Requiem” is an autobiographical poem of Anna Akhmatova's life during Stalin's era.
In the poem she described her feelings about horrible life events which she had to face, when her
only child was arrested and expected to be executed.
By that time Anna Akhmatova had already lost her husband, who was also shot by Soviet powers.

It was a big challenge to illustrate “Requiem” as it has never been illustrated before. The poem is full of allegory and it’s incredibly complicated to create a storyboard from someone’s feelings. It wasn't an easy task to find the most suited technique, but as soon as I started listening to recordings of the author’s voice, I decided on using black acrylic paint
with a palette knife.
I “cut” this story out of black stains of paint just like the Government tore Anna’s life to pieces.
