Seeing Sound
This is a photographic project that I am in the process of completing for University. All images were shot using a digital camera. The project looks into Cymatics, which is the science as well as art of sound. The method I chose to achieve my work, was by simply connecting a frequency generator to an amplifier, and the amplifier to a speaker. A bowl of water sat on the speaker cone and while I tweaked the fequency and volume, different vibrations carried through the water causing patterns/ripples. The images are split into 3rds, the first of each 3rd is low volume, the second of each 3rd is medium volume and the third of each 3rd is high volume. Variations in the patterns achieved can be observed below in the work.
Cymatics is an extremely interesting subject, one of which is being pursued a great deal in both scientific and artistic areas. Ernst Chladni and Hans Jenny are two pioneers of this phenonemum, yet it is beggining to become clear that this isn't some type of phantom beyond our understanding, it's infact part of our everyday existence. Sound is perhaps the single make-up of life, and it's been said that light is just an exstenion/development of sound.
