Surviving passengers
of Titanic,1912We have decided to use a dataset with the information about the passengers on the Titanic’s tragedy in 1912. We have filtered the data to have only the parameters that we want to use, and they were: Social Class, Gender, Age, Name.
We pretend to make a visualization on this data and see who survived more attending the economic power, and check if they gave priority to women and children.
We tried to represent the people in three clusters for each class. In the beggining we can see all the passengers together on a metaphorical boat, and if we write “iceberg” the people that died go to the bottom of the screen, and the ones who survived stay up, to reboot the program we just need to write “living”.
We created an interactive application that allows the user to filter the information he wants to see, through some checkboxes and one slider. The slider covers a range of all ages of the passengers on the boat, but there were some unknown ages, and for that we have a checkbox to include or not those people on the visualisation.
We wanted that the user get closer to the information he is observing and we show the name and age of each passenger. This information will appear if the mouse is pressed and the particle is dragged outside the group, when the mouse is dragged the particle gets back to its place.
The colors attributed to the particles (blue and red) represent males and females, and we played with the intensity of the colors to have a global perception of the ages of the passengers on the boat.
About the font, we have chosen a sans-serif font in a regular weight only playing width the sizes to create the hierarchy. We thought that is a clean and clear font to display the small inforations we want to show.
Before the animation starts we can visualise all the information about all the passengers, then we show not only the information about the living ones such as the information about the survivors. We decided to keep the general information on the screen so the user can have a feedback on the total passengers always in mind, and so they can compare the data.
