Design for elderly: walking aid

Design Brief

For this project I worked closely together with an elderly person. By doing an observation I noticed that this person had difficulties with sitting at a table. The transition of walking with the walking aid to sitting in a chair was a very long process. I wanted to create a solution for this problem by making a walking aid with a table.

This allows the elderly person to sit on a normal chair with the walking aid in front of him. By adding a table to the walking aid the person could now easily do the activities he does at the table.
My first intention was to make a walking aid with wood and aluminium. But when I was prototyping the connections I noticed that they where not strong enough. Then I decided to cast the connector pieces with a fastcast polyurethane resin.

The walking aid was designed to be flat packed. That's the main reason for connections.
