Numa Pompilius was the second king of ancient Rome, succeeding the city's founder, Romulus. He is best remembered for tempering the warlike Roman people with religious piety and worship. To do this, he consulted in secret with his lover, the nymph Egeria, who divined to him the will of Jupiter regarding proper honor and worship of the gods.
