FINAL YEAR PROJECT – A CONTEPORARY FACTORY

Project: A contemporary factory: reflections and experiments for a new concept
Year: 2010-2011

This project is trying to define a new concept, an idea of a production factory and a warehouse which contain a series of thoughts to improve workplaces, be energetically affordable, and include building quality in front of the actual series productions. In these years there’s no necessity to build huge production complex that occupy too much portion of territory: many factors as the outsourcing of production, outsourcing of the economy and the environment sustainable ideas, are changing the landscape of production areas trying to leave the old building system. The aim of this thesis is to find new organizational models, new forms and quality for a sector that had not be sufficiently considered from the architectural practice.
The guidelines for this project are based on the relationship between the workers and the building, environment and structure, organization and fluxes. The pillar of the concept is to maintain the equality between every typology of employment: desk workers and production workers are placed in the same spaces: with this condition production areas are more linked to directive offices with a more rapid exchange of informations and the possibility to evolve the internal organizational plant. Environment requirements for the offices bring positive qualities to the production areas with visual connections between the exterior and interior and high quality light study. For the construction process the aim was to maintain the lowest number of unique pieces and find a modular system that could be easily produced by other factories in other places then assembled in every part of the world. Natural light conditions was studied with specific illumination software; for this purpose optimization routines has been scripted to define correct light level distribution in every part of the factory. To optimize the light distribution had been developed a specific pseudo-evolutionary script that take as input a base light condition, then read all data generated from Radiance (light simulation software) and with appropriate conditional statement will change the light transmission factor of the panels in the roof of the building.
