Coast Guard Booklet

Coast Guard
Marine Environmental Protection
This project was a great experience. We were working with the United States Coast Guard to design promotional items. The section of the Coast Guard I was assigned to work with was the Marine Environmetal Protection(MEP) section. I met with Petty Officer Logan E. Willett who was a marine science technician in Providence, Rhode Island. The MEP mainly focuses on oil spill prevention. One of the things Officer Willett mentioned the Coast Guard wanted to promote was the phone number of the National Response Center (NRC). People didn't know who to call when dealing with an oil spill.

Going off of that though I designed a booklet that would inform the viewer what is the right thing to do when dealing with oil spills. Many people don't realize that they won't get in trouble as long as they are upfront and do their best to clean the oil pollution. My goal was to inform the public that the Coast Guard is there to help you and the consequences of improper cleanup that may lead up to criminal charges.

The inside booklet is an accordion fold booklet and gives the viewer a choice in which way to proceed after an oil spill. They can ignore it or they can call for help. If they call for help the Coast Guard can help them through the procedure and be there as an adviser. If they chose to ignore the spill and try to dispose of the oil improperly they can be charged with criminal charges. Use of dispersion agents on oil pollution without approval is a criminal charge. This booklet teaches you the benefits of calling for help and the consequences of trying to hide it.

In case they want to keep the number on hand the cover also has a perforated card with the number of the National Response Center.
