Raeesah Karriem's profile

3rd year Critical Studies Academic Poster

Brief:
Read and understand Gayatri Spivak's "Can the Subaltern Speak?" Contextualize it to being a South African designer and use it to answer a design question posed by youu. Create an academic poster that consists of your findings, as well as an activist poster that shows how your question affects you as a designer.

Interpretation and Implementation:
Essay question- Why does South African design have to contain elements of South African craft, in order for it to be identified as South African Design?
After reading and interpreting the given readings, I had acquired a better understanding of how the world works, espcially South Africa. In addition to the knowledge I acquired, I considered South Africa's visual language and how it reached the point it is at. The Academic poster speaks for itself. The activist poster, however, is a representation of the language that South Africans use to represent who they are, and their culture. The poster speaks on the use of visual culture to communicate to the universal world.

Client: Greenside Design Center College of Design.
