Cockatoo Island Ship Light and Brewery 2013

This project brief was to bring more people to Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour as a tourist attraction. Cockatoo Island used to be utilised for ship building in the past. It is now a host to tours as well as festivals and art events.

My proposal for Cockatoo Island was that a craft brewery be set up to draw the public onto the space. Craft breweries are usually small and independant and they are becoming prominent in Australia. A craft brewery also creates the opportunity for expansion in many directions such as being utilised as a gallery space like Young Henry’s Brewery in Newtown. The location on the Island I have chosen is the mould loft which was used to measure the components of a ship before it was assembled. I chose this spot because it has a wide open area, doors that open out onto a lengthy verandah, amazing views of the harbour and already contains toilet facilities. I have designed a site specific light that would be used in the brewery. The form of the light is derived from drawings of ships that were produced on Cockatoo and is multifinctional.

The light design is to mimic the frame of a ship. It is designed so that a single light can be used on a bench or wall mounted and to frames can also be conected together to form a pendant light. The materials used were lasercut plywood, a ceramic light fitting and the use of an edison globe style bulb.
