“Reappropriation” represents the exploration of appearance/reality by means of original collage work suggesting a “not of this world,” futuristic ambiance. The color range and material choice help push forward the futuristic ideals; iridescent/holographic films and foils, dense infused Lurex yarns, water resistant knits, heat fused fibers, hand spun yarn and coated denims yield both illusory and visible results. Primary research was collected through knitting swatches via machine and hand with an emphasis on the incorporation of materials other than yarn, these swatches were then used to create drapes that would later inform silhouette and design details. Studies of the interaction of light with iridescent film were also used in the formation of design details. The focus on knitwear has been realized in various different techniques, materials and dimensions. Exploration into water resistant treatment of natural yarns pre and post knitting with emphasis on keeping the original characteristics unchanged, the use of foils and coatings to produce water resistance as decorative surface treatment, non traditional materials used as/with yarn to produce unique shape, and stitch transfer techniques creating various levels of three-dimensional surfaces.

Emphasis within my process is placed on the transformation of fabrics and materials into the development of original textiles that can be translated into realized designs. With the textile process influencing the development of my collection it speaks to my design aesthetic having an innovative, forward thinking and offbeat approach.

“Reappropriation” addresses men who have the courage to adopt an individual style. The elements were worked as a “mix and match” collection. With the wide color range in mind, materials were intentionally placed to achieve the best visual effect when viewed as a collection, look or garment; therefore, the man has the option to select his three favorite pieces, pulling from any look, and worry not about the possibility of a poor color combination.
