Memories Of A Future Past

MEMORIES OF A FUTURE PAST
(ERINNERUNGEN AN EINE ZUKUNFT GEFÜHRT / 未来の思い出は渡された)

Alternate Realities Exhibition 2014

Memories Of A Future Past presents scattered memories of a past where the second World War ended differently. However, rather than emphasizing the political outcome, this piece explores the overwhelming influence of German and Japanese culture on consumerism. The aim was to create a nostalgia that is at once uncanny yet familiar, due to the international prevalence of German and Japanese even today. This piece is also a personal investigation for both artists involved as it questions what our memories would have been like had we grown up fully immersed in our respective heritages. This was part of the Alternate Realities Exhibition held at the New World School of the Arts Gallery.

The installation embodies a collection of nostalgic posters and graphics inspired and reconstructed from 80's and 90's memorabilia. Projected at the center of the collage is a looping video of ads and animations that reflect graphics contained on the walls, while a soundtrack, reminiscent of old shopping malls in Japan and Germany, plays in the background.
