IKEA – Design For Change
Assessment Item - Design an Instruction Manual that can be understood in many countries.
Just over 12 months ago, IKEA launched the People and Planet Positive for a new sustainable strategy. Our aim, that all IKEA products will have a positive impact on people and on the world.
Back in April 2014, we had a new ambition. Our Latest project is about improvement. We aim to better the lives of as many people as possible, and that includes the People from Cameroon Africa.
The number of bare feet, more so bare feet farmers develop Podoconiosis: a non-infectious disease (related to Elephantitis) is caused by tiny particles of Silica that penetrate into the skin found in volcanic soil. This disease makes it unbearable for famers to work, making walking almost impossible. In 2013, The World Health Organization recently recorded it as a Neglected Tropical Disease. Research has found that more than 1 million people suffer from this horrific illness. The numbers are alarming, and from here, the IKEA team made the conscious decision, to design a product that would be of everyday use to the people of Cameroon, a product that would benefit the lives, a product that would insure the health and safety of the people.

We teamed up with Ski and Snowboards Brand BURTON for a material that could withstand the harsh landscape within the farm lands. Burton’s partnership with soft drink giant Mountain Dew has created an active outerwear that focuses on improving sustainability in the apparel, especially in the 2011 to 2014 range. The fabrics made from 50% of recycled plastic bottles and 50% organic cotton has the surprising ability to keep consumers dry as well as breathable in their products.
We believe the use of these two companies can help IKEA’s vision on being more people and planet positive environmentally and sustainability. For the sole and innersole components, we used materials such as Seude and hand stitched cotton thread to keep the shoe breathable.
