Moodbook & Systembook
3Ba Graphic Design, Communication and System
Our final assignment for Communication & System was to create a systembook. As the name reveals, it had to contain a system to visualize or display an abstract adjective which doesn't result into a clear shape. This assignment took all year, and started with creating a moodbook.

So at first, we had to search for mission statements, and pick out the adjectives that doesn't result into a formal visualization. The words I'd chosen, are graceful and durable. For each word we had to collect images and pictures which inherit characterizing features of the adjectives. So we had to convert the formless adjectives into clear shapes, colors, … These images had to be collected in a moodbook, which would create a formal mood of the words. The final pages of this book were a kind of conclusion. A brief clarification of our findings, divided into 8 topics: form, color, relations in 2D, relations in 3D, fonts, grid/canvas, texture/structure and contradictions. This book was pure about research, we had to reach 125 pages so design was not a requirement.
With this moodbook as starting point, we had to convert the formal findings into a clear system. This system had to be displayed into the systembook, which had to be designed according to the rules we had created. Durable was the word I chose for further investigation. At first we had to determine a couple of necessary elements. Which dimensions would create a durable feel? What kind of typography and colors do I use? To find the answers to these questions, we could use the summary of our moodbook and convert the 8 topics into a system.

To start, I had to determine the dimensions. Afterwards I investigated the typography, based upon the earlier findings. Once I knew what font to use, it's size and other aspects, I could determine the type area, the grid and the whitespace. Then followed some research about the colors, durable printing, …
The research is displayed in my systembook, which can be read and downloaded here. While looking at it, keep in mind that the spine of the book is at the upper side. Because the width is 25cm and the height 15cm, it would be to long when opened. This would mean it would lose it's durable balance, so I decided to open it upwards.
