Red Letter Day | Motion Graphics

Red Letter Day is a short piece of motion graphics designed to show an important day in Edinburgh’s history. Being a tour guide and having a great deal of knowledge on the cities past events, I decided to pick a more abstract date and event.

George Mackenzie was a man who became known in Edinburgh for his inhuman persecution of the Covenanters, a religious group, in Greyfriars Churchyard. He would keep them prisoner within the graveyard with many passing away due to the harsh treatment they received. After George Mackenzie passed away he was buried next to the covenanters prison within the graveyard in what is known today as the Black Mausoleum.

In 1998 in Greyfriars Churchyard the first attack of the Mackenzie Poltergeist took place. He is often said to attack in the Black Mausoleum and the covenanter’s prison - both today remained locked for this reason. Attacks include bruises, cuts and often result in people falling unconscious.

This piece of motion graphics is to depict an attack from this poltergeist and includes statements from people who have witnessed an attack.
