Food Poisoning | Information is Beautiful Shortlist

This Infographic represents restaurant-associated food borne outbreaks reported in England and Wales from 1992 to 2009. The outbreaks have been split first by their pathogen, toxin and virus. These have been represented by an approximate shape of the actual pathogen when one was available. Within the ‘culprit’ the outbreaks have been split by cuisine type, where the area of the circle represents the number of outbreaks

I first created the circles by using a very basic nested d3.js Bubble packing layout. The resulting SVG circles were imported to Illustrator where I build the rest around the circles.
