Kinetic (2011), is the practical exploration of devices that produce the illusion of movement, based on the visual sensation of motion picture illusion. The motion picture illusion might be explained through the “persistence of vision” phenomenon. Encyclopedia Britannica defines it as “retaining of images cast upon the retina of the eye for a fraction of a second beyond their disappearance from the field of sight.” In short, the brain does not register the rapid change of still images as fast as the eye—therefore it creates the impression of movement. To exploit this phenomenon, scientists and artists have created mechanical devices that display this optical illusion.
