OLX - Messaging for Android

OLX - Messaging

Project Overview
The goal of the project was to allow users to send messages through the app. So far they were just able to send SMS, e-mail or phone call.
We wanted to integrate the messages between our buyers and sellers to make communication more fluid and increase the engagement.

Involvement
I was the Mobile Interaction Designer in a team that was integrated by a Product Owner, 4 Developers, 1 Visual Designer and 1 Q&A. It was a very complete team that worked in a very agile way.

Platform
Android
Understanding
After doing some benchmarking and gathering different solutions we found that making it as chat experience was the best option.
We did a wrokshop to define the general characteristics of the feature an align the team.
Early Ideas
I then sketched some flows and started finding some questions:
- What's the minimum data the user needs to link a chat with an item?
- How does the user differentiate / group those conversations He wants to buy from those He wants to sell?
- Ho do we handle error cases?
- How do we notify the user received a new message?
- What's the most polite way of asking the user his personal data?

With this questions in mind I sketched - tested - iterated - tested - iterated... a cuple of times.
In this case the wireframes and interactive prototypes were built with Axure.
Increasing fidelity
With some concepts and flow proved with some users we continued increasing the fidelity. We continued testing fidelity, the differentation between read and unread messages, if the notification of a new message was visible enough, etc. We did some tests and iterated based on that feedback
Improved version
After finding some new error cases and defining how to handle push notifications we launched the feature.
It had a great impact in the business so we adapted to iOS and mWeb platforms.
