The brief was to celebrate an aspect of typography and I chose to look at Braille. I have always found Braille really interesting and have always wanted to know more about it. It is a fascinating way to look at different ways in which typography can be seen; we wouldn't normally think about it being typography because we can't see the different letters and we can't read it. I wanted people to be more educated on Braille and its importance in society today.
The theme of the book is six because there is a formation of six dots that make up Braille. There are six different chapters of the book with six pages in each. The book is unbound because it can be read in any order the viewer chooses. The different chapters are placed in different folders because they represent a different part of Braille. They are then all placed in a box to keep them all together. Six promotional posters were also made for the book.
Each different part of the book has something physically or visually different about it so that they fit together as chapters. There is a section with circles stuck on the page, a section in tracing paper, a section for partially sighted people (in yellow), a section for the other senses that blind people use, a section fully in braille and a section laser cut out of paper.
Chapter One -
What is Braille? Who made Braille? What does it do?
Chapter Two -
How do you use Braille? What are Braille cells? What does the alphabet feel like?
Chapter Three -
Who reads Braille? Why is it important for them? What about partially sighted people?
Chapter Four -
How do you read Braille? How do you write Braille? What are Grade One and Grade Two Braille?
Chapter Five -
What other senses do blind people use? Are they stronger than people's senses with sight? Can they see light
and dark?
Chapter Six -
What can before Braille? Why is Braille so important? Why should we appreciate it as typography? And can it
change typeface?
The chapters -
These are the front pages of each chapter; they all make up the cells used to make Braille.
Posters -
These are just two of the six promotional posters made to advertise the book on braille. They each resemble a different chapter of the book.
Thanks for looking!
