Cafe for ZIL Cultural Center

ZIL Cultural Center in Moscow provides programmes for children and adults: dancing, drawing, theatre studios, science labs. The building is constructivism heritage and the biggest cultural center in Russia.

As part of my educational project I was suggested to design a cafe at its basement floor. The analysis revealed the following problems:
- low ceilings;
- small windows;
- dark finish materials make the space uncomfortable;
- decorations and partitions added in the 70s shrink and break the space.

Public ivestigation detected the following social needs:
- possibility to warm-up their own food;
- tables for children to do their home work;
- tables for adults who work on laptops.
My proposal reserves space for new programmes:
- skating rink in the park with blades rent from cafe;
- live music;
- equipment for public lectures.

Other functions:
- self servise corner;
- express line;
- night bar;
- proper kitchen.

Tables layout proposes intimate periferic zones for ZIL public entering from inside and outdoor visitors entering from outside. Huge table in the middle invites for communication and intersocial exchange.
Main finish material is white tiles in variable proportions with coloured rubbing.
Red highlights create visual diversity. Wooden elements add sense of warmth.
Part of the flooring is black granite remaining as a link to outdoor park materials.
Another part is the same granite, but grined and reused as terrazzo.
The shape of the express line and bar is derived from the shape of the building.
Express line and bar detailed drawing.
