During the course of structural planning we had an exercise concerns the study of the sculptures by Santiago Calatrava and the realization of similar work.
I and my team studied the sculpture “Head XIB” by Santiago Calatrava: it is a wooden cube, suspended on a steel rod and stabilized by cables anchored to the wooden base.
We realized a scuplture with a cube, composed of 8 smaller cubes spaced apart by an element, which is subjected to compression, and held by cables in tension. The cube was rest on a rod inclined, both held by cables in tension.
The cube download its own weight on the rod that is subjected to compression, and it is stabilized by cables anchored to the base.
To counterbalance the structure were been added other cubes, connected by hinges, connected to the big cube through cables that are put under tension by weight of small cubes.
We created a simplified model in two dimensions with the software “SAP 2000” and we had calculate its resistance, ultimate strenght and stress diagram.
