Royal Larvae Package Design
:: The Assignment ::
One of the big assignments in my Graphic Design III course was to develop a
package design for fictional sweets infused with insects. The objective was to
produce packaging appealing enough for the American market to purchase
and consume.
:: Preliminary work ::
After doing some research, I decided to develop packaging for chocolates infused with bee larvae. According people who tried it, bee larvae taste very similarly to peanut butter. However since bees and their larvae are valuable for their production of honey, they are relatively exepensive commodity. This is what drove me to design it as a high-end product.
:: Brand Design ::
My design was focused to staying away from the explicit nature of consuming insects and more on the abstraction on what these insects represent. Since bee larvae are nourished with specialized honey called royal honey, I created a connection that larvae are treated as royalty; and, by consuming royalty, you are consuming a valuable and expensive good.
The logo I began with a honeycomb shape which I then filled a crown to represent royalty and stripes to represent the bee. I tilted the honeycomb slightly to break symetry and create excitement. I worked in monochrome to make sure the logo could be easily printed onto anything.
:: Packaging Requirements ::
With the completion of the brand design we needed to focus on providing a proper package that matched the overall feel of the brand. On top of that, the package has to be practical: it has to be stand on its own, it had to fit on store shelves, it had to capable of stacking for transportation. The packaging also had to abide to all laws and regulations, such as providng nutrition label, weight, and ingedients.
:: Final Product ::
The final design stays in theme with the honeycomb hexagon. The lid is constructed apperture-style to invert in on itself and form a flower like ones that bees collect pollen from. Some of the comments I got were that it looked elegant, and not feminine.
