ABOUT ASEAN:

The Association of South East Asian Nations or commonly referred to as ASEAN, is a group of ten member countries particularly located on the South East Asian region. It was formed in the year 1967 by Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand with one vision to promote regional stability and political and economic cooperation. On January 1984, Brunei Darussalam joined the organization after achieving its independence; thus, making the nation as its sixth member. Before the turn of the Millennia, four more nations joined to complete the current ten members; these are Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and finally Cambodia.
ASEAN, since then instructs far greater influence on Asia-Pacific trade, political, and security issues than its members could achieve individually. This has driven ASEAN’s community building efforts. This work is based largely on consultation, consensus, and cooperation. The ASEAN Leaders at their Malaysian Summit in December 1997 affirmed to transform ASEAN into a stable, prosperous, and highly competitive region with equitable economic development, and reduced poverty and socio-economic differences. This has paved way for the ASEAN vision of an integrated community in 2020.
The Association keeps on arising toward economic, political, social and cultural prosperity. ASEAN as a single entity would rank as the sixth largest economy in the world, behind the US, China, Japan, India and Germany.
