ABOUT
Idea: Homing Pigeon is designed for assisting abused women who are not able to call for help in emergency, or helping them being noticed while they need someone to give them a hand. It’s a set of tools, the bird’s shape of alarm and pocket-sized remote control. In ancient times, humans used pigeon or hawk to help them deliver urgent information. Therefore, I apply bird’s image to my tool and it will deliver every abused woman’s call and help they avoid the persecution from an abusive relationship. If it’s hard to stop domestic violence forever, I hope my tool can create more opportunities for abused and battered women to reduce the exposure to violence. There are two functions on a remote control: sending message and making a warning sound. The first step is sending message to your family or intimate friends. You can set up recipients and pre-written message. When you feel threatened or unsafe, you merely need to push the power switch on the control, and then it will immediately send text and email to your recipients. Don’t be shy to ask them for help not should you isolate yourselves. They care about you and wish to be your pillar. The next step is making a fire alarm to attract more people’s attention or distracting the abuser. Nowadays, closer is the neighborhoods, farther is the heart-to-heart distance. We are told not to intervene other families’ quarrels, but we are always aware of a fire alarm. Taking advantage of people’s awareness towards a fire alarm, I seek to help the battered woman to find a moment to escape from violence. Usually the 2-minutes break can save your lives. All you have to do is to push the power switch Curation: Kevin O’Callaghan Homing Pigeon was exhibited at SVA gallery on January 10th - January 30th 2015.
