Thinking of the Big Picture

RSA Student Design Awards, 2014. Brief The Whole Package: Re-design consumer product packaging to minimise waste and environmental impact

Award: Commended

Our proposal for the brief is a toy packaging concept.

The packaging consists of two parts; backing and sleeve. The sleeve -supports and holds the structure of the packaging. Inside the backing is a mailing package folded flat, revealed when the front panel is torn off. The mailing package can be used to donate second hand toys to charity.

The design improves recyclability by the use of a single material, saves space in logistics and disposal by the ability of being flattened, and minimizes the production waste by simplicity and use of the material in the dieline. These aspects make it environmentally beneficial.

Social benefits come from the mailing package implement, which can be used to raise awareness, educate and in-kind donate to charities. It is a service that allows companies and customers together help those in need. It also functions as waste prevention, as usable unwanted products are given a second life instead of going to landfill.

The concept can give a brand positive recognition through the values of sustainability and responsibility and act as an image booster for a company. It could also help pull in customers, as the parents making the decision to purchase are likely to choose a toy that has an educational values.
