This project was created as a response to the YCN Pan Macmillan brief - to create a cover and inside illustration to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'.
I decided to use applique as the media, to produce illustrations which the target audience could relate to (gift buyers for 5-9 year old girls - primarily being Mothers, Grandmothers and Aunties/friends) Many females have an interest in some form of sewing, so I thought that they would be to attracted to a cover which features illustrations of this kind. The element of fabric and stitch retains a feeling of tradition, to reflect the 150 years which the story has been in publication, but the characters are conveyed in a slightly modern and updated illustrative style with friendly faces and gender neutral colours.
