Wood Casting: Stool

Wood casting is a technique which has not been explored at a vast level around the world. Coming across this technique in works of product designer Hilla Shamia, I decided to experiment with it for one of my courses.

The wood casted stool is an infusion of aluminium and metal. Through the process of aluminium sand casting, I infused the two materials which gave me a number added advantage to my piece of wood. As you pour the motlen aluminium into the sand cast, its fills into the cracks and soldifies. This gives an added advantage of increased strength to the wood and also aestheticizes it.

The molten aluminium burns at a temperature high enough to char a few centimeters of wood. During this process, a few small parts fell apart and could not be attached back. Along with this, a fourth of the piece of wood broke apart as the cracks were burnt through beause of the alumium. However, on soldifying, the aluminium held the broken piece together and got it back to being one piece. Also, by filling up the other cracks, it provides rigidity to the structure.
