An early use of a black flag with skull, crossbones, and hourglass is attributed to
french pirate captain Emanuel Wynn in 1700.
La première utilisation documentée du pavillon noir orné d’une tête de mort surmontant deux tibias ne remonte cependant qu'à 1700, lorsque le pirate français Emmanuel Wynne le hisse durant un engagement contre le HMS Poole au large de Santiago de Cuba. Le commandant du HMS Poole le décrit alors comme « une enseigne de sable avec des os croisés, une tête de mort et un sablier »
