Montrose Beach | Bird Tiles

Sample of combined tiles
The tiles on this wall (42"x90") include 14 bird species that migrate through or reside permanently at Montrose beach.

The proximiity of the tiles to each other, in different combinations, generate narratives about migration, inter-species competition, and geography.

Birds included: Red Shouldered Hawk, Peregrine Falcon, Snowy Owl, Screech Owl, Eastern Meadowlark, Common Starling, Common Sparrow, Belted Kingfisher, Kildeer, Piping Plover, American Avocet, and the Long-Billed Curlew

The tiles use specific physical features (talons, beaks, feathers, etc), prey, and other elements unique to each bird to create the decorative diaper surrounding each bird. The patterns allow the tiles to be recombined in any order, providing subtle fluctuations on a given surface.
