Guild of Responsibe Designers
Backround
For the practical element of the dissertation, I have created and build a network of 8 graphic designers who all share the same common goal: to use design skills to help the disadvantaged. Addressing both environmental and human needs.
This piece is the Guild's handbook and guidelines for members. Which aims to inform with the methodologies and rationale.
The synthesis between both my written element and practical piece is that what I have learned from my research is that design skills can be used to make a difference to the disadvantaged. The Guild is the start of social change at Leeds College of Art.
The Guild of Responsible Designers was born out of the lack of responsible and sustainable activity from students at Leeds College of Art. I knew of other students who had a similar interests and agendas as me and thought that we should become a collective and combined our skills and knowledge.
The Guild of Responsible Designers learn by working together, sharing our experiences and understanding. The outcomes of the discussions were more about participating and belonging than about specific items of content.

Design
The design is one which aims to be different and stand out from conventional publications. This is achieved by an custom size, use of stock and layout. This was done to demonstrate that the Guild’s aims and attitudes challenge the current environment.
The stock used is 100% recyclable as well as the binding, which is from 100% natural and eco friendly. These design decisions were made directly from my research for the project.
Feel free to ask any questions and feedback is welcome.

Rhizomatic Structure
This idea is to think of a community as an ecosystem in which each person is spreading their own understanding. It responds and grows according to its environment, not straight upwards like a tree, but in a haphazard networked fashion, much like a root of ginger.
