EW Barker Institute of Sports: Fencing

what is sport?
This particular project was done for Raffles Institution in 2012 to commerate the launch of the EW Barker Institute of Sports.

This work was commissioned to showcase fencing as a sport. For this series, a historical approach to fencing as a form of a gentlemen’s duel was used. A colonial setting was selected to give the sport some historical context.

Fencing as a sport didn’t have many rules, so elements of parkour were actually infused into the shoot itself, resulting in a radically different view on fencing. It is the hope of the creator that this series will provoke thought about the history of fencing as well as the historical background of the sport.
