While thinking about the concept and meaning of the word “ornamental” my process has taken me to explore the ideals of classicism and postmodernism. Through my readings on postmodernism in Literary Theory: A Guide for the Perplexed by Mary Klages I wanted to contrast these principles with those of classicism and high art.
My research and thought process are visually manifested through a structure that presents text on three planes. As a viewer approaches the installation at 90º, a complex ornamental pattern dominates the frontal plane. As the viewer moves to the left or right, or 45º, six distinguishing key words depicting the principles of classicism or postmodernism are revealed.
