The Deep side of the Web

We created a narration in order to communicate our research and our analysis to people: we began showing and describing the dark and frightening imaginary that people have about the Deep Web. From our explorations emerges how public opinion is misinformed about the topic, not knowing what the Deep Web actually is and what it is made of. A particular thing is that when people start to look on the web with more awareness, searching for the topic with specific terms as queries, like Tor, the situation changes. Also if it is used by a wide variety of people for both licit and illicit purposes, results are more positive and concrete, the knowledge brings a change of perception. Why it happens? Tor Browser is the anonymity tool that allows to access to a portion of the Deep Web, developed by the Tor Project. We inquired who is behind this project, to understand the values it carries and in which it believes. At last we collected some stories related to the Tor Browser and the freedom that it guarantees: how does it influence our society? Through real stories we can see how it is needful and indispensable to guarantee freedom and equality to people, good things that it allows has no possibility to take place otherwise.

Abbiamo creato una narrazione per comunicare alla gente la nostra ricerca e la nostra analisi: abbiamo iniziato mostrando e descrivendo il buio e spaventoso immaginario che le persone hanno riguardo al Deep Web. Dalle nostre esplorazioni emerge come l'opinione pubblica sia male informata sul tema. È interessante vedere come, quando le persone iniziano a cercare sul web con più consapevolezza, cercando l'argomento con termini specifici, come Tor, la situazione cambi. Anche se il Deep Web viene utilizzato da una vasta gamma di persone per scopi sia leciti che illeciti, i risultati sono più positivi e concreti, la conoscenza porta un cambiamento di percezione. Perché succede? Tor Browser è lo strumento anonimato che permette di accedere ad una porzione del Web profondo, sviluppato dal Tor Project. Abbiamo indagato chi sta dietro a questo strumento, per comprendere i valori che trasporta e in cui crede. Infine abbiamo raccolto alcune storie relative al Tor Browser e le libertà che garantisce: come influisce sulla nostra società? Attraverso storie vere possiamo vedere come sia utile e indispensabile per garantire la libertà e l'uguaglianza per le persone, le cose buone che permette non sarebbero possibili altrimenti.
