Clockwork

Team: Alexandra Greenspan, Andy Mah, Greta Gardner

Clockwork is a chair that keeps track of how long you sit. Its seat rotates 90 degrees over the course of three hours, ensuring that its occupant will have to take a break from sitting while the chair resets to its starting position.

There are many health risks that come with sitting for long stretches of time day after day, and Clockwork aims to create a fun an elegant way to combat these health issues.

It's time to take a stand and get up out of your seat! At least until it lets you sit at your desk again.
Demo Video: Quarter scaled chair moves quicker for demonstration
Initial sketches inspired by swivel chairs.
Exploring sundial geometry.
Exploring clock face geometry and intersecting ribs.
Mini cardboard prototype exploring sundial shape and exterior ribs.
Mini cardboard prototype exploring a back made of clock gears as ribs.
An Arduino RedBoard from SparkFun was used to power the chair.
Photocell sensor to detect seat occupency was made flush with the seat for comfort.
Press-fit motor mount without the need of screws or glue.
Our final design utilized a flat pack design to intersect three rings together. The two crossing rings that vary in length are symbolic of the minute and hour hands. A time can be displayed when viewed from the front view.

Laser cut from a 6"x22" piece of basswood.
We created a manequin in order to create a better sense of scale and to use for demonstration.
Can't forget the table for full effect.
