Skype iOS Redesign 2015 Concept
Self Initiated - 2015 - 2 weeks

For my first app design challenge (something I will be continuing throughout 2015), I wanted to tackle a commonly used phone app that has felt a little design neglect. Skype is a massive part of millions of peoples lives, myself included. Although Microsoft is increasingly focused on cross-platform apps, Skype seems to have stagnated.

My focus with this design was adding character and functionality. The home screen displays people first and foremost by increasing the avatar size by almost 50%. Instead of a long vertical list, the app uses groups so you can swipe left and right. You can manually group people by long pressing. Greater character has been achieved by buldging and rounding the avatar boxes, leading to natural use of squash and stretch animations.

Chat has improved readability with more white space, and functionality has been added so you can add any media you want to a message (photos, audio, documents etc). The dialler has been cleaned up, along with moving video controls to a more finger-accessible screen location. I am particularly proud of the new settings page, it consolidates two currently seperate sections in the app (and multiple pages) into one clearly organised, friendly, and understandable screen.

Thanks for taking a look!

I would like to keep expanding this project with animations and interactive prototypes, so keep checking back.
