In 1757, John Baskerville released his namesake typeface. Extremely concerned with perfection, he improved the technology of the printing press and even developed special paper to ensure the utmost precision when printing his typeface. Baskerville is considered the best example of a Transitional typeface, with vertical stress and wide counters to help with legibility. Along with Baskerville, the first penny farthing bicycles were invented in the 18th century. Much like a bicycle transports you from one place to another, Baskerville helped move typography from Old Style to Modern typefaces.
