DAO Typographic Journal

DAO Typographic Journal
Issue 0

This initial publication of DAO outlines
the spectrum of influence of the International
Typographic Style as cultivated by the Basel
Allgemeine Gewerbeschule (Basel School
of Design), lead by designers Armin Hofmann
and Emil Ruder, and its dissemination through
the journal Typografische Monatsblätter during
the early 1960s.

As a typographic journal, DAO explores
the path of the Swiss Style by summoning
principles, such as those thoroughly explained
in Emil Ruder’s article The Typography of Order
(published in Graphis Annual ’59/60 in 1959)
and book Typographie (published by Arthur
Niggli Ltd in 1967), and reinterpreting them
to appropriately illustrate contents.

Featured articles exhibit works by both teachers
and students of Basel, fundamental to the
foundation and development of the Swiss Style,
such as Yves Zimmermann, Robert Büchler,
Fridolin Müller, André Gürtler, Felix Berman
and Hans-Rudolf Lutz.

Due to the inevitable connection between
oriental philosophy and the æsthetic axioms
observed in Basel design, this journal is named
after the chinese concept DAO, meaning way
or path as well as principle or doctrine.
