Harlow Light Trail - D&AD Pantone Brief 2015

D&AD BRIEF
Reimagine your hometown through a new colour scheme. Think about everything that this identity could include, physical and digital: logo, transport, wayfinding, etc. The new colour scheme will be for the people, organisations, businesses, and communities that make up your hometown. Your solution should be something that everyone who lives, works, or is part of your hometown can own, adopt and experience, whoever they are.

RESPONSE
Harlow is the UK's sculpture town and the birthplace of the fibre optic - which carries information using light. Combining these ideas by creating sculptures from light came ‘Harlow Light Trail’. This is a sensory experience that gives local people the chance to connect with Harlow through colour. The light sculptures are created through a method of light refraction known as refractography and can be projected via 6 booths spread across the town as well as the 'Harlow Light Trail' app. The colour palette is based on the diffraction of white light - which is split into the 6 purest Pantone colours.

The 'Harlow Light Trail' allows people to create light sculptures from their phones. These can be saved and shared on Vine.

Custom typography made from refractographs (based on Decima Mono)
Print material uses holographic foil that changes colour depending on how the light hits the surface
A set of posters exemplify how local businesses can take ownership of the new identity

The 'Harlow Light Trail' website lets people know where to find the light booths. By clicking one of the 7 spots gives you the chance to see the live light stream of the projections as well as a gallery of light sculptures that were projected by the public.
The complexity of the refractographs correspond to the wavelengths of each colour. Red has the longest wavelength therefore the refractograph has a more simple structure. Whilst Purple has the shortest therefore the structure is a lot more complex.

The book features a series of 50 refractographs ranging in complexity depending on colour and wavelength. It has 6 sections (for each colour of the spectrum) and is coptic bound.
