CACTUS
Project development starting from the analysis of a natural shape.

CACTUS lamp grows out of the Opuntia Ficus Indica shapes.
Opuntia Ficus Indica is tropical plant, flat and oval in shape, which grows taking advantage of the aggregation of its own drums and which is commonly known in Italy as Ficodindia or Fico d’India.
  SHAPE AND FUNCTION

The handy shape of the top element allows you to grab and hold it firmly in the palm of your hand. Furthermore, the absence of mechanical connections eases elements’ division and assembly.
The mechanical connections absence is made possible through an innovative power mode, better known as induction power. This kind of power mode is already widely used to recharge batteries of many items such as electric toothbrushes and razors that could enter in contact with water, causing damage or becoming dangerous.

  COMPONENTS

Basically, induction power runs through a power-transmitter element, which is located on the concave part of the base and connected to the power supply, and a power-receiving element, placed at the base of the removable lighting element.
These ones are defined as “system of magnetically-coupled inductors”. The power-transmitter, exploiting power supply, generates a magnetic voltage which creates, in turn, another magnetic tension when approaching the power-receiver: that energy is the one used for charging the battery of the top element.
All this means a double power mode: electric for the base and by rechargeable battery for the removable element, which has the possibility to be left switched-on even once removed from the base itself.
Moreover, the low consuption LED bulbs generate a kind of cold, clean light, allow a lasting battery life and do not overheat the structure, making it always safe to grasp. The expected material, resistant to small bumps and ordinary-heights drops, is suitable to the 3D Printing realization.

  TECHNOLOGIES

The light guide can be deactivated by pushing button in the bottom of the base - a low power consumption LED with up to 20 hours life (two stylus version).
The LED battery (12V7Ah) is rechargeable through a mini USB input charger.

  MATERIALS AND MANUFACTURING PROCESSES

CACTUS is made of Sintered Polyamide, a completely waterproof material, suitable for both an indoor and outdoor usage.
The main manufacturing process is strictly related to 3D Printing technology, which allows the realization of design products with no production scraps, reducing processing time and trying out new complex morfological shapes.

  PROTOTYPE

The lamp has been planned during last year Design course (Ada Ghinato), and chosen by the company EXNOVO among more than 200 projects to be made as a prototype.
the lamp will be exposed in a ExNovo’s 3d printing exhibition during Expo 2015.
