THE PROBLEM
This university project asked me to choose a Welsh tourist destination and redesign their website in order to make it more appealing to families with children aged between 5 and 13. As the current Techniquest website does nothing to fulfil this at all, I thought it would be an interesting challenge to choose it as the topic of my redesign.
THE INSIGHT
Techniquest is an interactive science and technology museum, and my concept for the website reflects that. To navigate the site, the user interacts with the circuit: first turning it on and then following it down the page to ‘turn on’ each section. This reflects the interactive and technological nature of Techniquest and presents fun visuals to guide the user down the page.

The isometric style used for the illustrations was inspired by Minecraft, a computer game which is very popular with the 5-13 age group I was targeting. The game involves building and mechanics and is currently helping to get this age group interested in these things, along with adventure and exploring the world, so it is a style that would resonate with them and help to frame Techniquest as a similar, but real world, experience.
THE SOLUTION
The has two sections. The initial circuit is to inform all visitors, but particularly aimed at getting children excited about Techniquest. This section utilises bright buttons at the bottom of the first 'screen', mimicking the layout of children's toys, and fun bright colours. It outlines the different sections of the museum, and gives suggestions of simple activities that can be done at home to expand the Techniquest experience. The 'grown-ups' section is accessed via a separate menu, though the 'hamburger' icon which adults would easily recognise as a menu button. This section contains all of the necessary information for parents, teachers and carers to find out about and plan a visit to Techniquest.
