UNTITLED-9 // FBAUP 2015

Untitled-9 is an installation that took place at "Galeria da Cozinha", FBAUP (Porto).

It represents a new approach to Italo Calvino's literary work The Invisible Cities. Inside the room, nine white boxes are spread through the walls at a height of 1,65 meters. Inside each box is an audio speaker, an mp3 player and a 9 volts battery. On the underside, 6 small, lined up LEDS light up the room, which gives it a dusky atmosphere.

From each mp3 player the same “sound” is reproduced repeatedly, but with a delayed start from the previous one. The sounds overlap inside the room creating an unique soundtrack, although it is possible to listen to each sound alone by approaching each box. Those sounds also mingle with the visitor's footsteps (one can explore the room freely) and other outside noises, since the room is acoustically permeable.

Each one can explore this universe as he/she wishes, listening to the sound of whispers, wind, water,
footsteps, metals, and others, which were composed together acording with The Invisible Cities' structure.

Developed by Ana Fernandes, Alexandra Ramos, Clara Silva and Filipa Seixas.

"Arriving at each new city, the traveler finds again a past of his that he did not know he had: the foreignness of what you no longer are or no longer possess lies in wait for you in foreign, unpossessed places."
Italo Calvino, The Invisible Cities, 1972
