Crafting Cultures

In today’s fast-paced society, mass-production has mostly replaced the handicrafts of Singapore. As these traditional crafting trades are dying, our heritage is at risk. This project is targeted at locals who have interest in handmade crafts but lack the platform to learn more about them. Through Crafting Cultures, I hope to promote the beauty of traditional crafts and learn more about the crafts of our culture, its significance and its value.

Crafting Cultures 2014 is a local festival that celebrates the spirit of craftsmanship and gives handmade crafts a new lease of life. Through the exhibition and activities, people are able to learn more about the values, motifs and their symbolism in the traditional handcrafts of different cultures in Singapore.

I used motifs that are commonly found on beaded shoes, embroidery work, batik prints and various handmade crafts to create an collage that holds the essence of craftsmanship – intricate designs with an attention to detail.
The rich colours and the interaction of the symbols also reflects the rich, vibrant and diverse culture of Singapore
that we should learn to treasure.
