Years ago I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Papua New Guinea, an island nation just north of Australia, to work at a Print Shop in the Highlands near Goroka for almost two years. The Print Shop was remote and only had a one-color printing press, so I had to limit myself to line art which proved to be a fascinating challenge. I developed my own 'impressionist' version of crosshatch shading and produced some of my favorite images. Some of my images even made it onto the official Air Forms used by the government of PNG.
Huli bilasman - decorated member of the Huli tribe.
Bilasman - a dancer taking a smoke break at the Goroka Show
Fingerman - A joker humorously showing off the fact that Papua New Guinea men pierce the septum of their nose
Manki - a little boy, which is Pidgin is "Manki"
Cicada
Olpelaman - an older PNG man
Young Girl - a girl from the Polynesian dominated northern areas of PNG
Huliman - a decorated member of the Huli 'Wigman' tribe, known internationally for their elaborate wig headdresses
Blanket - a little boy wrapped in a blanket made of beat palm tree membrane. The material is actually quite soft, and waterproof!
Meri - the Pidgin word for "Woman" is "Meri.' This woman is wearing a palm membrane cloak as a rain hood.
Rhino Beetle - these bugs were enormous there, almost 4 inches long! And they hissed!
